Review of The Young Victoria (2009) by Sam T — 08 May 2010

This is it? I love my dramatic sweeping British epics about royal families but this was neither dramatically sweeping nor epic. It started off exciting and interesting, focusing on power struggles, deception and Victoria finding her independence.

Then it somehow transformed into people reading letters in voiceover while you look at beautiful furniture. There was suddenly no drama, no love story or anything to keep you interested. Everything happened so fast, there was no chemistry between Emily Bunt and Rupert Friend, even if there was the telling or development of their relationship was told so quickly you'll miss it (apparently I did).

While it was pretty to look at, the scenery just could save the movie's lack of story. I was bored and longed for anything, a fight, a death or simply someone to explain to me why I should continue watching this.

The whole movie felt constricted, like the writer and director were afraid to take chances and write without fear, telling a compelling story. Maybe they were worried about remaining accurate or pissing off the British or just maybe they filmed from the wrong script version.

Come to think of it, this felt like more of a script outline or first draft. This movie should have taken chances, not worry about inaccuracies and just told something that would keep me fromm falling alseep.

Just anything other then just pretty furniture and opera.
