Review of The Young Victoria (2009) by Kay T — 01 Jun 2010
Emily Blunt wasn't determined enough to be Victoria IMHO. Too much of a "sequestered child" who's clueless as to how to act, speak, take charge of both the country and the court followers. I preferred the movie "Mrs Brown" (Queen Victoria after the death of Prince Albert) starring Judy Dench as Victoria. She showed a grieving but hardened widow. "The Young Victoria" should have been virginal and innocent but not untrained. All potential contenders for the throne were educated from birth on court protocol, who to beware of, who to befriend, and how to take command from the start. I saw none of that in this movie.
Very lackluster scenes of the court conspiracies and plots/subplots. It was more on the order of a high school play rather than a documentary or mini-series.
Definitely missed the mark on this one!
