Review of The Young Lions (1958) by Timothy C — 17 Sep 2007
Brando, Brando uber alles. Marlon's far better, more seductive & more complex, than this rather hokey film deserves. He's the archetypal "decent German" who is essentially good but who backed the wrong horse.
Brando takes this ridiculous & dangerous myth and plays around with it, tries to seduce and mock us with it. The end is very blah, with Clift's Jewish GI telling is that "from now on, the human beings will run the world.
" US foreign policy since then has made this species of trash rather hard to take. This is the kind of film which clearly made Brando contemptuous of his profession.
