Review of The Young Lieutenant (2005) by Keely B — 01 Jan 2007
It's been a long time since I've seen a French movie and I realize now how much I've missed them. The absence of manipulative music artifically driving one's emotions, the drawn out scenes to give a full perspective, the lust for life attitude of the characters, all make me regret the little national impasse we find ourselves in currently with our old friends on the continent.
Le Petit Lieutenant does for Nathalie Baye what the television series, Prime Suspect, did for Helen Mirren, opening our eyes to a more mature yet in every way desirable woman attempting to cope with the daunting challenge of commanding an oh so male police investigative unit. And it's not just a matter of mastering the requirments of the job but also of surviving devastating emotional loss.
I was deeply moved, perhaps influenced by the actual recent shooting death of a 28-year-old officer in the line of duty here in San Francisco.
