Review of The Yes Men (2003) by David S — 17 Mar 2010
I'm the type of person that gets angry at political disagreements. Everyone arguing and fighting with absolutely no correct answer to their quarrel. With "The Yes Men" we get a small group activists taking aim at big by way of the WTO. Do they have a solid argument against them? Of course they do. Are these guys as funny as they think they are? Absolutely not.
These men travel from conference to conference posing as members of WTO and say and do ridiculous things to embarrass the organization. In the case of the film, it's not the political agenda I disagree with, it's the condescending and classless approach by which these men go about "preaching" their opinions. The people attending these conventions, who are not even directly related to the organization being attacked, are caught in the middle of two bickering sides and are just forced to observe so these pranksters can get their moment in the news.
Yes, the world is fucked up. I agree things need to change, but the useless unfunny gimmicks here are anything but life altering, let alone funny. I would say that this is an easy one to avoid, but others apparently think otherwise. Do yourself a favor and go see Chris Smith's vastly superior documentary "American Movie"...
