Review of The Yellow Handkerchief (2009) by Andrew S — 02 Jan 2011
A subtle road trip indie drama. While there isn't much plot development going on I'm completely at ease with that as the interesting and bizarre relationship that forms between these three strangers searching for themselves.
Eddie Redmayne really shines as an extremely socially awkward young man. While Kristen Steward does surprisingly well in her role. At times you feel as if she develops some sort of attraction to William Hurt's character which is slightly off-putting consider he seems like a father figure to the duo.
But the story never goes down that road. Instead she finally gives in to Eddie's characters advances which felt forced and not natural at all. I liked how the flashback scenes were woven into the present day narrative journey.
One thing the film never answers is what crime did William Hurt's character commit, it's rather annoying its left unanswered but I'll admit I also like the element of never revealing the reason why as it isn't necessarily essential to the story being told.
