Review of The Yellow Handkerchief (2009) by Marti H — 04 Apr 2011
This story sneaks up on you. It was recommended by two of my very good NF movie buddies and fellow reviewers. But after the second act, I began to wonder if they had watched a different movie. Starring William Hurt, Maria Bello, Kristen Steward, and a likable young man named Eddie Redmayne, the story unfolds quite slowly.
Three of these very different people, Brett Hanson (Hurt), Martine (Stewart), and Gordy (Redmayne) end up in an old convertible - each of them seemingly going nowhere and each of them not completely comfortable with one another.
All three appear to be lost souls. No one cares about them and they are a bit aimless. But through the use of effective flashbacks, we learn about Ben's life and his love for the lovely May (Maria Bello).
Ben divorced May when he went to prison to free her to live her own life while he was incarcerated. But he never stopped loving her. Might it be possible for this odd threesome to locate May, and could Ben be fortunate enough to find her single and unattached? As the three journey through the poor towns and bayous of Louisiana, there is one glimmer of hope - a yellow handkerchief.
This one is an excellent, slow-paced character study. Recommended for the sentimental and romantic.
