Review of The Year of the Yao (2004) by Frank L — 19 Aug 2007
Having been brought up in the West but raised by Thai parents, I thought this documentary was a very interesting piece. It felt like looking into the box that was Yao Ming's life, understanding the cultural differences and the conflicts. Add celebrity status to that and you could feel the pressure and frustration in him despite Yao maintaining a cool, calm posture. Watching him try and try and try so hard, you just couldn't help rooting for the guy to make it big. Other the hand, Colin, Yao's translator, was like a "comic relief" to documentary - being charmingly honest and sincere that you just couldn't help liking the guy.
Overall? It's worth watching.
