Review of The Yakuza (1974) by Chance F — 02 Oct 2008
Sydney Pollack is dead. RIP to a great filmmaker and human being. I met him briefly at a screening of "The Firm", where he impressed me with his peaceful, deep-voiced knowledge on actors, the business, philoosphy and making a damn good movie.
In 1974, with an aging, sober Robert Mitchum, Sydney managed to portray with dignity and grace the story of two ageing men descendant of old school standards. The notion of Giri is so excellently explained, I don't know if it can be stated in any other way.
"The Yakuza" is a forgotten pearl amongst an exploited genre that merits a re-screening anyday.
