Review of The Wrestler (2008) by Michael J — 27 Aug 2011
Well, there's really no denying that Darren Aronofsky is an amazing director and The Wrestler is definitely an amazing film. Honestly, even though I love Aronofsky's films, I didn't know what to expect.
Especially seeing how some were comparing it to Raging Bull which I still haven't seen yet, but it's definitely one on my list for sure. That being said though, I thought this was a masterpiece.
Sure, Aronofsky's direction is a bit rough around the edges with certain scenes that feel they could have been excluded out. However, I personally feel it adds more to the film and makes it appropriately dark and gritty.
The script, storyline, and performances are all amazing. Definitely a solid performance from Mickey Rourke and even a great performance from Marisa Tomei. Some feel that the film was slow at parts. Well, I couldn't disagree more.
I found the film to be extremely engaging and brilliantly paced complete with a rewarding and thought-provoking conclusion. Definitely quality work from Aronofsky once again.
