Review of The Wrestler (2008) by Drew O — 25 May 2012
Darren Aronofsky is known for not holding anything back, and boy, The Wrestler pulls absolutely no punches. There's so much greatness to come out of this film that it is next to impossible to not enjoy it.
Telling a simple yet engaging story, the plot follows Randy "The Ram" Robison, an aging professional wrestler long past his prime. The fans still love him, however, and Ram continues to do the sport despite his age and health.
Outside of wrestling, the Ram is lonely, poor, and very distant from his only daughter. the story is frequently depressing but manages to be uplifting at the same time. The emotion is so great that I can think of few films able to match it.
I cannot go through this review without mentioning Rourke's performance as the Ram. Wow is one word that comes to mind. He becomes his character, and is absolutely perfect in the role. There's really nothing I can say about his performance that hasn't been said by every other person that has seen this film.
You really won't believe it until you see it.The Wrestler is a very powerful and moving film, and a cinematic experience unlike any other I have been through. Mr. Rourke and Mr. Aronofsky, I applaud you.
This is the best film of 2008.
