Review of The Wrestler (2008) by Bill B — 07 Aug 2011
This film achieves in my eyes the impossible - putting poetry and danger into the art of scripted fighting. Like Rocky in its set up The Wrestler shows a warts and all depiction of the life outside the ring as well as in. It is also a powerful messege about the unstoppable juggernaut of ageing and the realisation of ones mortality and the options left after spending a life in one physical career.
Its frequently depressing, occaisionally insane (Staple gun fight anyone?) sometimes embarrasingly funny and consistantly realistic and brutally brilliant.
