Review of The Wrestler (2008) by Sebastien S — 09 Nov 2012
The Wrestler is a testimony to the terrible sacrifices many artists make, just for the sake of entertaining us. The movie tells the tale of a wrestler's life & has been shot in a way that it can qualify as a documentary.
The direction is good, fight choreography is excellent, Mansell's music doesn't have much to do but is still effective in its small package but performances are the strongest feature of this film.
Mickey Rourke resurrects himself with a powerful & explosive performance that is heart-winning & heart-wrenching at the same time. The sadness in his expressions is wonderfully captured, making this his best performance so far.
Overall, it may not be Aronofsky's best work but The Wrestler still manages to be an effective drama that is a very satisfying piece of work.
