Review of The Wrestler (2008) by Ibraheem M — 01 Dec 2014
The Wrestler is a beautiful exposé of modern wrestling and also a stunning profile of a broken man, who struggles to make ends meet financially and emotionally against a tidal wave of emotion from Stephanie, his daughter, (Evan Rachel Wood) and Cassidy, a stripper who Randy becomes fond of.
Rourke plays the character brilliantly, owing to his own diminished reputation in the field of acting in recent years. This is an emotional roller-coaster, a gritty, at times difficult to watch (due to the amount of raw emotion Rourke creates) account of a washed-up, tired wreck of a man, who still wants to love.
This is one of those films that rarely comes around, and gives me goosebumps just thinking about how incredible the acting and scripting was. Definitely worthy of an Oscar nomination, if not an award too.
