Review of The World's End (2013) by Ethan P — 07 Jul 2017
The final instalment of the Cornetto Trilogy is also the best. Talk about going out with a bang, holy moly. What's strange is that "The World's End" is sort of like a trilogy all on its own, as each of the three acts embody a different genre and almost feels like a follow-up story to the act to come before it.
But the shifts never feel unnatural or out of place. Everything flows perfectly, and a big part of that is due to how well plot points are set up and foreshadowed. My only issue with the film is that occasional moments of action don't fully land, because of some obvious CGI and improperly synced sound effects (and one particular head butt where the contact between heads is just missed by a poorly timed cut), but none of these made too big of an impact on my overall experience.
The cast is excellent, with Pegg and Frost as funny as ever, and not a single member of the core group feeling generic or underdeveloped. And the screenplay is expectedly witty, and Wright's visuals make any mundane actions feel exciting and any exciting actions feel even more so.
This this the perfect film to end an excellent trilogy, and I wouldn't be surprised if three more Cornetto flavours were invented just to have more of these films made.
