Review of The World of Apu (1959) by Kunal J — 18 Sep 2015
This was my first Satyajit Ray film. Words cannot express the uniqueness of his movie making. He has the art to profoundly express the themes of gratitude, realism, poverty, cultural crossover which was happening in India after Independence. Apur Sansar is certainly an important film in my life. As an ardent film viewer and thinker, I could see that characters playing there part, the old backdrop of an Indian Village, poetry in the dialogues and intensity in the face of the characters in evocative scenes.
The journey of Apu from adolescence to a widower is heart warming and pragmatic. The cast is impressive right from Soumitra Chatterjee playing as Apur to the beautiful Sharmila Tagore. Do watch it!!.
