Review of The World Is Not Enough (1999) by Richard L — 26 Nov 2014
What I liked: skiing, Pierce Brosnan, Sophie Marceau, Q, the chase through London. What I didn't like: pretty much everything else. This was a bad time for Bond, the 1990s, when the franchise ran off the rails after losing Roger Moore but before new life was breathed into it in the 21st century.
Attribute it to what you will: the end of the Cold War, the loss of talent like Moore, composer John Barry, title designer Maurice Binder and set designer Ken Adam, or just the artistic lethargy of the decade when much of the cinematic talent was operating in the independent film sphere.
I love John Cleese but seeing him here as Q's assistant, R, just didn't work. And some of the overseas locations in this film just weren't very glamorous compared to what we've come to expect in these movies, like Azerbaijan.
This was a pretty disappointing film all around.
