Review of The World Is Not Enough (1999) by Michael B — 20 Mar 2015
This is where it started to go wrong for Brosnan. He started off great with his first two movies and it was all downhill from here. Brosnan is still strong as 007, best besides Moore and Connery at the time.
Supporting cast is decent. Judi Dench is still great as M but from there it isn't great. Sophie is okay as the villainous Elektra King. Renard is a B level bad guy and doesn't quite hold up to past A listers in the 007 franchise.
Denise Richards may be my least favorite Bond girl ever. She is a weak actress and her character Christmas Jones is uninteresting as well, which doesn't help. From there its worse. The script is weak as the story isn't awful but there isn't a great balance of story to action and that's arguably the biggest downfall.
Bond is not Bourne and like 2008's Quantum of Solace there is too much action for a bond film. All in all its a 'meh' bond film when you just expect so much. I think the biggest misstep can be seen in hiring Apted to direct as he just has never handled anything like 007 before or since making this film.
Its one of the weaker Bond movies and that pretty much sums it up. Meh.
