Review of The World Is Not Enough (1999) by Ryan M — 31 Jul 2013
Maybe because this is the first 007 movie I've watched critically, but I thoroughly enjoyed Michael Apted's The World Is Not Enough. Despite the obscene overuse of double entendres and sexual puns, I was enchanted by Pierce Brosnan's James Bond.
The plot was so ridiculous and so chaotic that I actually found it more amusing than absurd. I mean, the first scene includes a boat/submarine/car/hot air balloon chase, and others include paratrooper things at a ski resort, a firefight in a nuclear facility, helicopters with giant saws attached to them, what looked like an antique torture device, makeshift bobsledding in a giant oil pipeline, magical flames that never go out, a submarine crash, and a freaking cane-gun.
On top of all of that, a significant portion of the film takes place in Kazakhstan... Awesome. It's not like this movie had any real lasting value, but it kept me super entertained, and for that, I'll give it three stars.
Bottom line, this may not be the cream of the 007 crop, but it's one hell of a ride. I'd recommend it to summer action fans everywhere.
