Review of The World According to Garp (1982) by Lou E — 27 Jul 2007
The novel was one of the most significant reading experiences of my life so this movie never really had a chance for me, even though I wanted to love it. All these years on, it has its moments but in a way that's the problem. With so much material to choose from it ends up having an episodic feel and I found it hard to fathom the characters' motivation most of the time. Why do they cheat on each other, for instance?
It starts well but fades.
Gelnn Close was a revelation in her role. She's perfect. This was the first time I'd ever seen John Lithgow so it made his work for Brian De Palma even more amazing, and creepy, when I caught up with that.
