Review of The Words (2012) by Peneflix M — 11 Sep 2012
This film, largely about writers writing about writers, looks as though almost every line was focus-grouped. One of the characters (the wife?) talks about how true the characters are in what she's read, but none of the characters in the movie, except perhaps for Dennis Quaid's, has any depth or detail: they are author's cyphers, the Ideas of characters, moved predictably around the chess board by a listless player.
There is something egocentric about the whole thing, and not just about the character at the center of the story: perhaps the author of the book/screenplay really wanted just to be a Writer, rather than to write about something interesting.
The handling of the moral problem at the center of the story seems contrived, artificial. Save your money.
