Review of The Words (2012) by Dan A — 25 Jan 2014
Fuck me. This is a cram-job if I ever did see one. I'm just a loser who watches too many movies, but even I can share some advice to the writer/director of this. Here it is - Less is more! Just keep the story simple.
Make it exclusively about Bradley Cooper finding an old, unpublished manuscript, taking credit for it, and the subsequent consequences he suffers because of it. Instead the story is told like this; an author reads his new novel at a public reading, the novel is the story of Bradley Cooper stealing the novel, then he meets the original author of the stolen novel, who then spends 20 minutes (no joke) reminiscing about his earlier life in an endless flashback showing us how he wrote the original novel, then the film returns to the real life novelist at his own book reading, and it's revealed that Bradley Cooper is the fictionalized version of himself, and his new novel is based on how he stole a novel from and old guy.
Still following? Nah, thought not.
