Review of The Words (2012) by Ken B — 27 Feb 2014
Raises your hopes, then dashes them.
Interesting, original drama...that ultimately goes nowhere. The book-within-a-book-within-a-movie concept was very interesting. (Sort of a literary Inception). The base level, Bradley Cooper-Jeremy Irons, story was easily the most interesting. It was decent story in its own right. All it needed was an insightful and/or emotional conclusion, or for the higher level story, the Dennis Quaid-Olivia Wilde one, to tie everything together.
Unfortunately, the Dennis-Quaid-Olivia Wilde story, leaves far more questions than answers, and is where the disappointment lies. All through the movie I was wondering why this story even existed, as the Bradley Cooper one was good enough to stand on its own two feet. Not that the Dennis Quaid story was particularly boring, it just didn't seem to be going anywhere. Sadly, it then proceeds to go nowhere. The writer-directors try to make a point with the Dennis Quaid story, but fail.
They should have left out the Dennis Quaid level altogether, and crafted a better ending for the Bradley Cooper story.
Ultimately the move is still entertaining and likable, but it could have been so much better.
Decent performances from Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Irons (especially), Dennis Quaid, Olivia Wilde and Zoe Saldana.
