Review of The Woodsman (2004) by Donato R — 05 Jun 2007
This film achieves the seemingly impossible and paints paedophiles in a human light to almost universal acclaim. Kevin bacon is majestic as Walt, and one can feel the anguish he encounters daily as he is enslaved by his mental illness.
The film is beautifully shot, with long, lingering visuals of seemingly unimportant objects, which actually bear great significance in the symbolism of the film. Mos Def is convincingly menacing as the bigoted cop, and this will only serve to further his acting talents and reputation.
Nicole Kassell clearly has a grasp of a sensitive subject, and allows the viewer to make up their own mind about Walt, undoubtedly Kevin bacon's best role to date. A stunning film, and heartbreakingly moving at times.
Worth every penny.
