Review of The Woodsman (2004) by Christie B — 06 Oct 2007
A superbly made drama with a fantastic performance from kevin bacon. this is very disturbing material that at many times made me feel uneasy and bothered, but the way in which writer-director nicole kassell approaches the subject is smart and at the same time eye-opening.
mos def plays superbly as bacon's parole officer. he delivers a monologue that to this day makes me cringe and feel uneasy. the subject matter is very disturbing, and something often try and get away from having to experience on screen, but the amount of class used in approaching the subject here is perfect.
its never visually graphic, but it gets its point across. it depends on dialog to allow you to understand the dangers of "monsters" in the outside world. we are also shown a story of personal redemption and light of proof that even "monsters" can change.
I have always respected kevin bacon as an actor and this raised the respect on many levels. this is a hard to film to bring to life, but the cast and crew splendidly pulled it off.
