It's scary for too reasons - first, there's Bacon in a role of a pedophile and second, the story is cruelly convincing.
As soon as you say "all right I got the picture, now stop", he's asking a girl in a park to sit in his lap. And in the same time, he is a well made protagonist to whose world-view you're taken into.
The directing was really good, with fine dream sequence, and the beating sequence actually looking painful.
