Review of The Woodsman (2004) by Charles O — 28 Apr 2008
I finally got round to watching this film. Very harrowing subject matter. Quite some thought went into how to deal with subject and issues that surround it. I have to give some credit for that. It hasn't sensationalised or trivialised it.
However this is a film that should have been about recidivism amongst paedophiles. But it sets out with too broad a canvas and ends up leaving the components just lying there inert with too little context or synergy.
The attempt to redeem the character is noble but truly unrealistic. Most paedophiles are not just wayward miscreants they are people with deep rooted sexual perversions that are truly sociopathic. A hug, a few glares and a little bit of kindness isn't all that is needed to set them right.
