Review of The Woodsman (2004) by Jukka H — 29 Jun 2011
Quiet, intriguing, and imperfect yet affecting. Kevin Bacon gives a great subtle performance, although the rest of the acting doesn't match his besides that of Mos Def's and Hannah Pilkes'.
What's most impressive about this film is how it deals with its subject, treating pedophilia as a mental illness and not necessarily the vice of evil men. Bacon's character is inherently good; he just has an Achille's heel which just happens to be repulsed by society.
There are lots of problems with the screenplay (absolutely unbelievable at times) and cinematography (bland and unengaging) and the directing is just plain cheesy/annoying at times, but Bacon's performance above all makes this worth seeing.
