Review of The Woodsman (2004) by Holly F — 19 Mar 2011
An intelligent look into a disturbed mind. The Woodsman is a very clever film.Instead of making the main character likeable and fully rehabilitated it takes a realistic look at Walter(Kevin Bacon) after hes been released from prison.
The film is very dark but it doesnt try to shock you with scenes of walter's crimes. The biggest look into walter's mind is provided by the diary he keeps, the contents of which are quite disturbing as he rationalises the actions of pedophiles and pretty much places the blame on the children as he insists that it's their decision to go.
The film had the potential to be great but it falls short with weak story aspects like walter's girlfriend whos seems to forgive him too easily and the fact that the film would have you believe that every second person you meet is propaly.
A child molester.
Overall its a very good film that could have so easily gone wrong. You get a great perfomance from Kevin Bacon, a smart look into an extremely contoversial issue and experience that will keep you thinking after the credits have rolled.
