Review of The Woman King (2022) by Moviemitch96 — 20 Sep 2022
Viola Davis leads a cast that depicts the Agojie, an all-female group of African warriors who defend their home and tribe from the men of the Oyo Empire in the early 1800s. I didn't think much of this one based off the posters and previews initially.
It just honestly looked like nothing we haven't really seen before, but the rave reviews and apparent A+ Cinemascore it received convinced me. And while Davis is as excellent as always, the film's storyline and plot beats really are all too familiar territory.
And with the exception of Davis, the lack of character development for most of the supporting characters made them feel all too one dimensional. However, the film also does contain some epic and entertaining battles scattered throughout, and it's hard not to admire the film's extensive production values and design.
But overall, Davis is is top form here and carries a commanding presence from start to finish, along with some epic and expertly-choreographed battle sequences that make up for a familiar-feeling story that lacks character development.
