This movie proudly proclaims it's "based on an historical event." If that's true, then the battles portrayed in the movie were fights to preserve the lucrative slave trade that the Dahomey society depended on.

According to Wikipedia, "The growth of Dahomey coincided with the growth of the Atlantic slave trade, and it became known to Europeans as a major supplier of slaves... Captives taken in warfare were sold to Europeans or became slaves in Dahomey, where they worked on royal plantations and were routinely mass executed in large-scale human sacrifices during the festival celebrations known as the Annual Customs of Dahomey.".

Dahomey also is famous for being the birthplace of Voodoo. Lovely place.
