Review of The Woman in Red (1984) by Philip G — 25 Nov 2007
Well, everyone remembers Kelly LeBrock's debut, the dress she wears as she passes over the heating vent and the catchiness of Stevie Wonder's #1 single "I Just Called to Say I Love You" from this a-typical Gene Wilder 80s comedy.
What I didn't remember at all is the fact that Charles Grodin plays a gay man dumped by his boyfriend after he cheats on him with a young guy he meets at a party. Generally this is not a shocking revelation, but for a film produced in 1984, the fact that his sexuality was treated as a non-issue completely floored me.
Thus, there is nothing bad about this silly comedy, there is nothing great about it either. It's simply a cute Gene Wilder 80s comedy with some cute laughs and lots of big hair. However, for the shockingly normal treatment of a gay character in an era filled with stereotypes and homophobic characters, it boosts this cute little comedy from a run-of-the-mill two or three stars to four.
