Review of The Wolverine (2013) by Jessica H — 21 Jun 2014
I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO SO MUCH! Let me tell you why this movie is super awesome in my opinion:
1. This movie is so much more than just Logan protecting Mariko and finding a way to regain his healing ability. This movie is about Logan's journey in finally accepting Jean's death, relinquishing his guilt and finding his purpose in life. This movie also shows how Man can be cruel in his insatiable greed.
2. This movie captured my attention right from the start to the end and did not let go. I did not even have the heart or extra attention to fiddle with my phone!
3. This story was different from previous X-Men movies in terms of tone and the way the story it is told. To me, this movie seemed like a blending of American and Japanese story-telling elements- with the straightforward style of American movie-making and the poignant story-telling in Japanese films.
4. The fighting sequences were amazing and well-executed. My favourite fighting scene was the heart-stopping fight between Wolverine and the Yakuzas on top of the bullet train!
5. The character of Mariko was one of contradictions. Her beautiful and willow frame belied a core of steely strength. I was so surprised that she had the strength to kill her grandfather. I would have thought that she would not be able to stop her grandfather because he is her kin. Yet she had the emotional strength and integrity to recognise her grandfather's faults and to stop him despite of his relationship with her. I really respect that.
6. The Wolverine, enough said.
I gushed about this movie throughout this post. A high recommendation is a given, right? Go watch this while it's in cinema! You will not regret!
