Review of The Wolverine (2013) by Bradley W — 08 Jul 2014
The Wolverine brings back the action and fun that have made this franchise great. While the first standalone Wolverine film was a failure in the eyes of most fans, this one gets it right. They give us the proper character devlopment, story, and action that are necessary to bring us one of Marvel's greatest creations.
I have a soft spot for The Wolverine, and I would even consider him my favorite hero in all of Marvel's lore. To me he surpasses all the great Marvel heroes such as Spider-Man, Iron Man, or Captain America because his character has been through hell and back while still managing to hang on to his humanity.
He is a dark and conflicted hero that somehow still makes the audience laugh and smile at his very appearance on screen. This may he do to Hugh Jackman's top notch performance once again, who for over a decade has proved that he was and still is the best choice for this role.
He has the charisma and power to still hold the torch and its just awesome. The final act of this film could get a bit cartoonish at times and perhaps the film doesn't live up to some of the others in the franchise, but its a big game changer for Wolverine's character and James Mangold's direction knows how to handle it.
I loved seeing the new setting and new characters, but I was very happy to see continuation in the series since The Last Stand after all the prequels (even though First Class was a brilliant return to form for the franchise).
While not perfect, its a thrilling and awesome superhero film that proves that the franchise still has life left and that Hugh Jackman still kills it as the Wolverine.
