Review of The Wolverine (2013) by War D — 06 Aug 2014
After Wolverine's last outing, I had low expectations for this film. Fortunately, Wolvie returns triumphant in "The Wolverine". You can tell that the filmmakers took great care on this film because they gave fans what they wanted. Hugh Jackman really hit the weights for this one. Not only can that guy act, but he is ridiculously ripped, and it makes Wolverine even more intimidating. Another great thing is that the film doesn't cater to the child audience. This graphic and violent movie is for mature audiences only. Finally, one of the best things about this film is how original Wolverine's character arc is. Throw in some nice action scenes and you've got a great film.
However, this film is not without its faults. One of the biggest problems with the previous films was that there were too many characters. However, this film suffers from too few characters. While the small cast allows for plenty of character development, it just doesn't feel like an X-Men movie without more costumed mutants. But this film's biggest problem is the plot. The plot is soooo confusing, and I constantly find myself questioning the motivations of many of the characters.
In the end, "The Wolverine" feels like a movie that was only made to hold fans over until "Days of Future Past". In an age of comic-book movies, "The Wolverine" feels irrelevant, but is still one of the better installments in the X-franchise. This movie does lack the themes that made the originals great, but it is overall a more entertaining film than "X1". It takes a while to build up to the action, but it is worth the wait. And on a final note, this film has one of the greatest mid-credit scenes ever, so make sure you stick around for that!
