Review of The Wolverine (2013) by Danny O — 08 Aug 2015
Apparently it takes two Wolverine solo outings to get it right. After the comedown that was Origins Wolverine, I wasn't overly optimistic about this one. However this movie get back on track, and makes for such a good time.
Hugh Jackman once again proves he is the best Wolverine that there ever could have possibly been. What I liked most about this film is that for once, there isn't a mutant overload in this movie. You have Wolverine, and two others.
It's a stripped down character film, and that's why it's so good. The action is very well shot (the bullet train sequence is a real standout) and the idea of Wolverine losing his powers makes the story even more compelling (although I'm not sure how he didn't die a couple of times).
The character development is pretty good, and we get to see the character at his lowest low, before being tied up in a mystery in Japan. It's a gritty movie, becoming everything that I wanted to see Wolverine do in his own film.
It's exciting and thrilling. However, it does have a messy third act, and a villain that I never really thought was that original. The pacing isn't that great, but it's never boring. The Wolverine gets 3/5 stars (B-).
