Review of The Wolverine (2013) by Morgan H — 15 May 2014
More of a character piece less of the usual cut from the blockbuster cloth that most superhero movies tend to be these days. The wolverine hits the powerful emotional moments when its just one on one character moments.
Hugh Jackman has cemented his status as Logan/Wolverine proving just how difficult it is to imagine someone else in the role he brings a sense of weight to the character and gravitas that helps give it the emotional connection needed.
The supporting cast are mostly great although only Tao Okamoto and Rila Fukushima make an impact. The rest of the spporting cast seem to just fade into the background and the Viper acts as a somewhat cheesy villain that is only in place to give a sense of danger to Logan's morality.
Where the film falters however is the final act/third of the film with possibly one of the most predictable twists in recent history and a cartoonish (but fun) final battle manages to squeeze the Wolverine into a gap between the same old-same old superhero movies and the truly memorable outside the box attempts (The Dark Knight, Iron Man, X2).
