Review of The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) by Jose M — 02 Jan 2015
Possibly one of the most entertaining and first films I saw for 2015 is the Wolf of Wall Street. It is like the Great Gatsby meets the Dirt and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. It is exciting, decadent, and debauchery as director Martin Scorsese tells the tale of a bad boy stockbroker starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
DiCaprio, who has come a long way since Titanic, delivers an edgy performances as Jordan Belfort. The film is based on the memoir by Jordan Belfort who had an issue regarding the film's portrayal of him.
The film is pretty much about Belfort who is narrating the film and breaks the fourth wall at certain scenes. These scenes were pretty much entertaining along with some of the other scenes that I found surprising.
Belfort's whole tale is debauchery! There's a lot of drugs and sex with an unapologetic dialogue where F bombs are going off all around! I had a lot of fun watching this very well made film, but of course it is not with its problems.
Scorsese, who directed some really great films, has only made an entertaining picture without the compelling or gripping drama. He incorporates his style from some of his other films, but fails to have a strong female character.
Naomi (Margot Roberts), Belfort's wife, is occupies the film as just being there and only needed to continue telling the story of Belfort. There was more characterization within the stockbrokers than there was to her.
Other than that, there was a not a lot to learn from this film although we do learn what happens when someone takes too much Lemmon. The scene is pretty hilarious. Surprisingly enough, despite the running time of 179 minutes, Wolf of Wall Street was never boring thanks to the elements of DiCaprio's performance and Scorsese's direction.
I recommend everyone to watch it even if you are uptight about content. See it once at least and experience the Wolf of Wall Street!
