I've seen the story done better, but this is the original and it still has its power. I think the fact that it moves along very quickly works against it and it ends in a very choppy way. Poor Bela Lugosi.
10 years before he was playing Dracula and here he gets about 7 minutes of screen time. The effects are really tacky, but what do you expect for the time?
