What elevates this film above the other classic Universal monster flicks is Lon Chaney Jr.'s sympathetic yet frightening portrayal of the title character, the film's speedy economic pacing, the thrilling score, and the surprisingly involving storyline expertly scripted by Curt Siodmak.
All these elements combined manifest in a thoroughly entertaining, yet deeply affecting, tragic opus.
