Review of The Wolf Man (1941) by Joel J — 31 Oct 2008
A little too simple for its own good and with special effects that weren't particularly innovative for the time (Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde had pulled off the dissolve transformation far more successfully 10 years prior), The Wolf Man is nonetheless a good example of horror being used to examine characters rather than scares.
With a quick pace and a the thrilling mystery perspective of the cops on The Wolf Man's trail, as well as a story element ahead of its time in the possibility that the whole plot might be a figment of Chaney's imagination, The Wolf Man supersedes its flaws to make the most of its short runtime.
