Review of The Wizard of Oz (1939) by Adrian Z — 25 Jan 2014
Although it will be more enthralling for the young ones in terms of story and content, one cannot take away the fact that The Wizard of Oz visually stunning beyond it's years, genuinely tuneful, and earnestly charming.
Wonderful performances all around, particularly from Bolger, Lahr, and Haley as The Scarecrow, The Cowardly Lion, and the Tin Man respectively. Margaret Hamilton is particularly memorable as the ever-so-quotable Wicked Witch of the North.
The new HD restoration highlights how brilliant the costumes and the make-up effects are and remain nearly 75 years later, even if the increased detail reveals where the lovely sets end and the matte paintings begin.
