Review of The Wizard of Oz (1939) by Amrit T — 16 May 2014
From a modern perspective the slow pace of the movie may seem refreshing but the characters are too flat, rather suitable for a cartoon, and too conventional for a fairytale. Garland, nevertheless, masters her role playing it believable faithful while being totally adorable.
The special effects may have been high-end at the time. However, for a person that did not grow up with the movie, having seen it in 2014 for the first time, the imagery is too artificial to be able to connect to it.
This, of course, is due to modern CGI that made us used to artificial worlds that look life- or dreamlike.
