Review of The Wiz (1978) by Tina C — 21 Sep 2007
The curious thing about The Wizard of Oz is that Dorothy seems to get gradually older with each retelling. In the book she's a little girl, Judy Garland made her fifteen-sixteenish, and here they apparently thought that the story could still work if Dorothy was my mother's age! It doesn't. I don't care that it's Diana Ross, she's still too old. Coming of age stories don't work with a forty year old heroine.
Aside from that, this movie's alright. Michael Jackson is actually pretty good, and this has some fun song and dance numbers. Sure, it gets corny and the "wicked witch" character isn't particularly menacing, but it definately has its moments.
