Review of The Witches of Eastwick (1987) by Charles James I — 25 Sep 2009
[P.S. Death to the imminent tv series.].
Gaaaahd, who could've ever put together such a cast? During the late 80's, Jack Nicholson was The Devil. Whether he was the Joker or Damien or whatever role, he sure made a living off of being the tempter.
But this movie is about the women. Cher kicks ass as the realistic one. Michelle Pfeiffer's the earthy one. Susan Sarandon is the repressed one whose lid finally blows off. The whole setup that their conjunction "makes things happen" is beautiful! And when they put their minds to the same thing, you see this scary determination. Every man should be made to watch this movie before puberty. [Hey, didn't I say something similar for another "chick flick"?].
And you know how everyone remembers Michael Douglas's "Greed is Good" sermon from "Wall Street"? What folks remember less often is Jack's sermon about God and Nature in the church at the end of this movie. Genius sermon.
