Review of The Witch (2016) by Kinch K — 29 Jul 2016
Having had time to think about it I scaled this up to four stars, and it could well go higher on subsequent viewings. Update: on second viewing this has shot to 5/5...
First off it's ridiculously well made, all the actors are very good with some performances genuinely revelatory. The set design is impeccable and the way the film is shot brought to mind Bergman and Kubrick, so yeah â" great cinematography!
I think what I loved most, though, is how well it works on three levels: as a psychologically astute study of a family disintegrating; as a critique of narrow religious fanaticism and how it manifests its own worst nightmares; and as a 'yes this is really the devil be scared' horror film.
