Review of The Witch (2016) by Lifeaswe K — 12 Sep 2016
Brilliant acting, beautiful cinematography, chilling music, and unsettling imagery. If you like watching overrated slasher films with gross you out scenes and cheesy jump scares involving dumb ass teenagers fucking with shit they shouldn't fuck with then this movie is not for you.
If you want a smart, brilliantly acted, slow burning haunt this movie will be sure to chill you to the core. First off the acting is just unparelleled. Newcomer Anya Taylor-Joy is exceptionally talented.
Also understand that this is first and foremost a period piece about a 17th century Puritan family. With that in mind think about why the threat of an unseen evil would terrify them. This is not a run of the mill horror film.
It is not supposed to be scary. It is supposed to be atmospheric, chilling, and unsettling. The mix of crushing loss and total isolation play off each ither.
