Review of The Witch (2016) by Michael L — 05 Oct 2016
I'll try to make this review short and sweet.
What's Good: The acting is superb. Stellar. Ralph Ineson is perfect. The setting is eerie and foreboding, with excellent use of the forest environment to create an unsettling mood throughout the movie.
What's not Good: The movie takes way too long to build up enough suspense to unsettle you. By the time the film starts to take a turn into "WTF" territory and unnerve you, you're on the verge of boredom. The film alludes to sinister activity for most of its short run time, and only within the last 30-45 minutes does the film start to get really creepy before finally leading towards it's extremely abrupt and strange conclusion.
Overall the film is not the typical witch movie. Sure, there are elements of classic witch stories spattered throughout the movie, but even the extremely strong performances cannot rescue the movie from it's strange plot, boredom inducing first 30 minutes and a very unsatisfying and head scratching finale.
It's a good low budget creep show, but if you were expecting to be scared half to death, you may find yourself being bored half to death.
