Review of The Witch (2016) by Michelle S — 12 Oct 2016
There are 2 kinds of horror movies that I actually like. Type 1) the run of the mill horror movie. The kind that presents a cast of characters with the bare minimum of backstory or personality. The characters are introduced to setting, things go wrong, people die and it's just a sitting on the edge of your seat thrill. Type 2 is more rare and hard to pull off well. It's the kind of horror movie that does not rely on action to pull you into the story. The kind where from the start, there's an eerie tone and the tone continues to get more and more desperate as the film progresses until the final climax.
The Witch would definitely be a good example of type 2. It relies on character growth and tone, which basically means that the movie moves at a very slow pace but still manages to build tension throughout its 90 minutes. Wonderful movie. Will be sure to avoid goats and loan rabbits from now on.
P.S. The dad in this movie has the coolest voice ever.
