Review of The Witch (2016) by John T — 07 May 2017
The Witch is only a bit similar to an early 1970's film, "Blood on Satan's Claw" - only slightly. The similarity begins and ends with it being a period horror film set in the 1600's. The horrors in this film are those of abject terror - true horror.
I can tell you this film kept me up at night after watching it. The imagery was so very disturbing.
The screenwriters used actual period transcripts from the era to create this film and in places the dialogue is exactly the same as the source material. That makes it all the more disturbing to me.
This is a slow boil film - there are no gigantic monsters or CGI effects that will call out to teenagers, yet I dare say this film would cause disturbed sleep in many teens who see it through to the end.
In my opinion, this is possibly the best horror film that has been made in the last twenty plus years.
There's no updated dialogue or "gotcha" shocks. It's just damned good filmmaking.
